Sponsored swim in aid of DVT charity

A SPONSORED swim the length of the Channel has been held to raise money for a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) charity and Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice.
The 22-mile swimathon was organised by Sue Taylor, a senior sister at the DGH and mother of Penny Oldfield, who died two years ago at the age of 24 from DVT.
She wanted to raise money for Lifeblood and was joined by Bev Attridge, a fundraiser for the children's hospice, and Janis Bevan, who swam 150 lengths for the A Pound for Joe appeal in aid of Joe Townsend, a Royal Marine who lost both legs in a bomb blast in Afghanistan.
Several swimmers turned up at the DGH outdoor pool and the Channel challenge was completed in just over four hours, with the sponsored swimmers completing an extra six miles on top of the distance they set themselves.
A cake sale, barbecue and tombola raised £408.
