ALDI has confirmed it is the new owner of a site in Hampden Park.
The site in Brassey Avenue was previously owned by Somerfield, which closed down on April 19 as a result of its strategy to develop smaller convenience stores over the next two years.
Aldi has been trying to develop a store on the
cattle market si
te in Hailsham, but has been turned down by Wealden District Council.
Aware that Somerfield was going to vacate the site in Hampden Park, Aldi started discussions with Somerfield with regard to acquiring the property.
Roland Stanley, property director for Aldi, said Aldi is 'delighted to announce' it has 'completed the purchase' of the site in Hampden Park.
Mr Stanley added, "We plan to submit a planning application in which we will commission a major refurbishment of the existing store.
"We hope to provide shoppers in the Eastbourne area with a new Aldi store offering our great range of quality, own brand groceries and our hugely popular weekly specials at outstanding value for money prices."
About half of the staff who worked at Somerfield in Hampden Park chose to take voluntary redundancy and the rest have been redeployed by the company.
Somerfield has acquired the former Music Zone store in Cornfield Road and plans to open a small convenience store on that site.
