Local couple in earthquake zone are safe
AN Eastbourne couple who were travelling in China when the country was struck by an earthquake on Monday have been found safe and well.
David Harris-White, from Meads, who works in IT, and his wife Mary, both 57, were among a group of 19 Britons travelling in the Sichuan province of China when the earthquake occurred.
The group, travelling with tour company Kuoni, was reported missing following the quake. All were found on Thursday at the Wolong Panda Reserve near Chengdu, the capital of the Sichuan Province.
They were air-lifted to safety in a mission organised by the British Foreign Office and the British Consulate in China and are waiting to fly back to the UK. Mr and Mrs Harris-White are said to be uninjured.
The couple's daughter Alex Harris-White, 24, from Eastbourne, said yesterday, "I received a call at 4.30am this morning from the
travel company to say
they had managed to reach them.
"They were taken by helicopter from the area and are healthy. When I heard the news I was very relieved. I was jumping around the room.
"I have not actually spoken to my parents yet, so I do not know exactly what
happened or when they are coming home, but we are
all so pleased and
relieved."
