COASTGUARDS have praised Eastbourne people for their prompt response during a lifeboat drill.

Eastbourne Inshore Lifeboat let off a flare near the pier at around 1pm on Sunday (May 11).

Residents and visitors enjoying the sunshine on Eastbourne's beaches were quick to alert Dover Coastguard about a possible problem at sea.

Coastguard watch officer Sarah Bray said, "Eastbourne Lifeboats told us they would be letting off a flare shortly after 1pm.

"We received a pretty good response, so well done to the people of Eastbourne – they deserve a pat on the back."

Sarah Bray said Dover Coastguard received around 12 calls in just a couple of minutes.
