Local businesses were out in force last week to back the fight to save the DGH and raise much-needed money for the campaign.
Kicking off a day of fundraising events which raised around £5,000, the campaign team hit the roads in the Save the DGH Battle Bus and visited local businesses to collect donations.
Campaign leader Liz Walke was joined on board the classic 1950s bus by Eastbourne MP Nigel Waterson and leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, David Tutt.
On a whistle-stop tour, the Battle Bus stopped off to collect donations from the Sovereign Harbour Residents' Association, Ellis Building Contractors, Whiteline Group, Visick Cars, Langney Shopping Centre and Eastbourne Borough FC, raising a combined £3,750 for the fighting fund.
Speaking after a successful morning of fundraising, Nigel Waterson offered his thanks to those who have backed the campaign.
He said, "There has been huge support from local people and businesses and I am enormously grateful for their efforts."
Fundraising then moved to the Langney Road offices of Cobb PR, where campaign member Tim Cobb and his staff, dressed as nurses and welcomed visitors. Cavendish Bakery provided a special Save the DGH cake for the day, and Dave Carter of Bespoke Blinds Ltd kindly donated money for the catering.
After refreshments, guests were able to purchase clothes provided by Azure ladies clothing shop of South Street, who came along to support the event and donated a percentage of profits to the fund.
The Rodmill pub, situated opposite the DGH, then hosted a very successful evening donation 'drop-off'.
Speaking after the event, Liz Walke said, "It has been an absolutely wonderful day, we have reached all parts of the community and to finish off opposite the DGH was very appropriate."
Councillor David Tutt thanked all those who pledged their support to the campaign.
He said, "We will do all we can in the coming months to ensure that all services at the DGH are retained. Our chances of victory are improving and the will of the people is still very much with us."
