UROLOGICAL surgeons at Eastbourne District General Hospital are the first in this country and possibly Europe to successfully complete a cutting-edge operation.
The operation, a single incision laparoscopic surgical operation to remove a blockage in the tube leading from the kidney to the bladder, used minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery with cameras and instruments inserted through a single access porta
l into the kidney area.

The use of only one incision as opposed to three, in other forms of this procedure, means the patient will have less pain and scarring and a reduced risk of infection.

The patient, a local woman, has gone home quickly after the operation.
She told surgeons, before leaving hospital, that she was delighted with her extremely minimal access surgery.

Peter Rimington, the consultant urologist who performed the procedure, said, "This single incision procedure is a first in the country and for this Trust.

"It is better for the patient cosmetically as they have fewer scars in the region following the operation.

"All the theatre staff stayed on late to ensure the operation was a complete success.

"The dedication and willingness of the staff in this hospital has been and continues to be the envy of many of my surgical colleagues in other hospitals.

"Despite the clinical workload and the day-to-day stress, I feel privileged to work here and you can all be proud of this achievement."

The urology team involved in the operation led by Mr Rimington included Mr Satya Rai on camera, Lesley Powell as scrub sister with Dr Simon Walton as consultant anaesthetist.
