The incident happened at 2am on Thursday August 21 inside Atlantis on Eastbourne pier.
The man had gone into the nightclub at around 12.30am after celebrating a relative's birthday in pubs in Eastbourne. It is believed that there was an argument i
nside the club, and the man was punched in the face, causing him to fall back and momentarily lose consciousness. He then left the club with friends.
The following day on Friday he became increasingly unwell and, after attending the DGH, it was discovered that he had sustained head injuries and was transferred to Hurstwood Park Hospital in Haywards Heath, where he remains in a critical condition.
DI Ian Williams from Eastbourne CID said, "We are appealing for any witnesses to this assault inside the Atlantis nightclub last Wednesday night and early hours of Thursday morning. This is an unprovoked attack which has left a man seriously injured.
"We are also interested in any witnesses who may have seen an altercation earlier that evening between a man and a woman in pubs in Eastbourne."
District Inspector Tony Wakefield said, "Eastbourne has a good working relationship with the pubs and nightclubs around the town. This would appear to have been an isolated incident. We would like to thank staff at the Atlantis night club for their cooperation."
A 28-year-old local man has been arrested and is on bail pending further enquiries.
