AIRBOURNE RISES ABOVE THE FLAK

DESPITE criticisms over noise and pollution, Airbourne is still flying high in public opinion — according to council chiefs.
Eastbourne Borough Council decided to set up an Airbourne Scrutiny Task Group last year to look into the four-day festival's 'true value' to the town.
The group spoke to stakeholders — including hoteliers, the pier general manager and the Arndale Centre manager — members of the public and Green representatives to collate the town's views.
The group's report has recommended that: Airbourne is a positive benefit to Eastbourne and the South East region and should therefore continue; Eastbourne Borough Council should continue to run the event unless a successful alternative is found; attention should be given to feedback from the general public and ways should be found of measuring and minimising negative impact; and that this scrutiny review should be carried out on a three-yearly cycle in order to review the value of the event.
"Although there a small number of vociferous objectors to Airbourne, it is obvious by the huge majority of positive responses from the general public that the event has enormous support from both residents and visitors," states the report.
"There is evidence that the large influx of visitors to Airbourne brings about increased spend within the town and area. The event therefore has a positive economic impact on Eastbourne and the surrounding area.
"The overall view of the stakeholders is that the council should continue to run the event.
"There is a definite lobby, albeit small, regarding the issue of noise nuisance. Ways could be sought perhaps to offer advice to the public with advance warnings of the event.
"The scrutiny task group agrees that the economic and media value of Airbourne is such to make this event sustainable for the foreseeable future."
The report will be discussed by the scrutiny committee at the Town Hall on Monday, at 6pm.
