ST LUKE'S Community Market is held on the first and third Fridays of the month from 9am to midday at St Luke's Parish Centre.

It aims to provide the community of Stone Cross and its neighbouring areas with a source of local produce, crafts and services, thus reducing transportation miles and the need for excessive packaging, and a regular and sociable meeting place for customers and traders.

The market has been held on five occasions now and has already built up a solid base of regular stalls, including Friday Street Farmers – organic beef, lamb, chickens and eggs, Say Cheese – local and other British cow and goat cheeses, Hankham Organics fruit and vegetables (starting June 5), The Happy Pig Company – free-range, additive-free pork, bacon and sausages, Oven Fresh Bakery – freshly baked bread, cakes and pastries, Hook & Son – organic raw milk. Milton Nurseries – vegetable and bedding plants, Prickly Hedgehog Cakes – fairy and other dainty cakes, Jubilee Delights – chutneys, jams & marmalades, Merryweather Herbs – herbs, edible and cottage garden plants, Stone Cross Windmill – wholemeal flour and souvenirs, Wikaniko ('We can eco') – eco-friendly cleaning products, bio-degradable bags, energy-saving gadgets, organic toiletries, plus a wide range of local crafts including jewellery, wood turning, hand-made cards, gifts, clothes, cushions, knitting, candles and a stall selling Fairtrade goods and accessories.

Starting on June 5, the market organiser is expecting to be joined at each term-time market by some Year 6 pupils from Hankham School.

They will be helping clear tables for the caf and chatting with customers and stallholders.

This is part of their community involvement programme and will help improve the children's social skills while helping them learn about food production, eco-friendliness and animal welfare.

It is also expected that East Sussex County Council's 'Compost Doctor' will be there on June 5, advocating the benefits of home composting.

A representative from the charity Care for the Carers will be promoting National Carers' Week, which starts on June 8.

The next market dates are June 5 and 19 and July 3 and 17.

DATES to note at St Luke's Church in Stone Cross during June:

On Saturday, June 13 there will be a musicals themed fete from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Admission is free and there will be a wide variety of stalls, games and sideshows.

Refreshments will be served all day, including a barbecue and a beer and wine tent.

Two weeks later, the St Luke's Players will be presenting a murder mystery entitled The Final Act in St Luke's Parish Centre, Stone Cross, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost 6, which includes refreshments, but bring your own drinks.

TOMORROW is polling day for elections to East Sussex County Council and the European Parliament.

For the electoral division of Pevensey and Westham, polling stations will be at the Ethel Wood Community Centre, St Wilfrid's Church Hall, Pevensey Memorial Hall, Stone Cross Memorial Hall and Westham Village Hall.

All polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm. All people entitled to vote should have received a polling card that should be taken with them when they go to vote. It isn't essential but it is helpful.

Candidates standing for election to East Sussex County Council are Bernier MD – Lib Dem, Freebody TG – Con, Payea RS – Lab and Pursglove MC – UKIP.
