29 April 2009
THE NEXT COUPLE OF weekends are going to be very busy for the trustees of Stone Cross Mill and the Friends.
Starting on Saturday, May 2, they will all be gathering at Westham Village Hall, where they will be holding their spring fundraising coffee morning. The doors will open at 10am and there will be stalls of interest to everyone: cakes (many made from the stone-ground flour produced by the mill), books (make your choice and put a donation into the box), tombola (100 prizes to tempt anyone) and bric-a-brac.
The RNLI will also be there (with souvenirs on sale) and there will be a raffle and much more.
The mill will be opening as normal on Sunday from 2pm to 5 pm, with guided tours. Refreshments will also be available.
On Bank Holiday Monday, the mill will open from 2pm to 5 pm. There will be a maypole in the grounds (kindly loaned by Hankham School) and visitors will be able to try to dance around the maypole – last year the attempts caused a lot of hilarity.
At 3pm, there will be a competition for the 2009 Stone Cross Mill Princess and/or Prince. This is open to children between the ages of five and 10.
All in all, a very hectic weekend.
HOWEVER, IT DOES NOT finish there as the following weekend – May 9 and 10 – is National Mills Weekend, when all the mills in UK are asked to open to the public if possible.
Stone Cross Mill will be opening from 10am to 4pm on each day. There will be visiting stalls in the Roundel and on Sunday, the Long Man Morris team will be visiting the mill at approximately 2.30pm to entertain the crowd.
There are also hopesthere will be another morris team to dance on the Saturday but this has not yet been confirmed.
THE MONTHLY MEETING OF Westham Parish Council took place on Monday, April 20 in Westham Village Hall.
The local PCSO was in attendance to give a report to the council and those residents attending. He told the meeting that Julia Pope was the new district commander and went on to identify the main areas of crime being experienced in the parishes of Westham and Pevensey, which, among others, were anti-social behaviour and criminal behaviour.
He reported that a mini motor bike had been seized and crushed and that shoplifters in Tesco had been arrested.
One continuing problem is that of parking around the parishes and this is being dealt with. PCSO Harwood is to talk to Pevensey and Westham School about starting a 'walking bus' scheme.
Cllr Tooley volunteered to sit on the panel which will identify the problems within the parishes. He asked that Cllr Saxby also be invited.
THE MINUTES OF THE meeting held on March 16 were read, approved and signed.
Matters arising included the information that a further arts morning had been arranged and would take place on at the end of the week. The first one had been a great success. There had not been any committee meetings since the last full council meeting, as was the case with sub-committee meetings.
Reports on outside meetings were given by Cllr Picton, who had attended the RDRA AGM: Cllrs B and D Molog, Bruce and the clerk attended the Community Governance Review held at Wealden: Cllr B Molog attended the Pevensey Town Trust meeting when the future of the car park was discussed; Cllrs B Molog and Parsons attended the Wealden Planning Conference; following a WDALC meeting, Cllr B Molog asked that councillors attend a Power of Wellbeing course; Cllr Sutherland attended the committee meeting of the Stone Cross Memorial Hall; the Transport Partnership reported that the community bus was a success – two new drivers were being trained but there was still a need for more people to man the phones; the Wednesday timetable had been amended and the Hailsham route had been improved.
He also reported that he had attended a transport seminar and would be circulating a report in due course. The meeting was then suspended to hear reports from the district councillors present and to receive questions from members..
DISTRICT councillor D Daer congratulated the council on gaining Quality Parish Status.
She also asked if the council would consider putting up a sign by the castle to show that there were shops nearby.
She said that the council government inspectors visited Wealden and declared the officers to be among the best in the country.
As a member of the environment and scrutinees committee she asked residents to let Wealden know how they felt the recycling services were working.
District councillor K Balsdon said he had written to the Rev Barrett for an update on the state of the church wall. He had also attended a benefits course and was very keen to raise the profile of the benefits service.
In addition, he said there was a new head and a new chairman of governors at Pevensey and Westham School.
Questions from Members of the public: D Thompson expressed concerns about the Gallows Lane roundabout, as visibility was poor, the bus shelter blocked the view and the lorries drove over the roundabout, which he found very noisy. Mrs McCall complained that children aged over ten were using the Castle Bolton play park, and asked for the ownership sign in the park to be removed. She also complained that children were cycling on the verges and playing football in the park.
Cllrs B Molog and R Perrin explained that the signs were a Rospa requirement and had to stay and the clerk said she had already asked the PCSO to patrol the area regularly.
Mr Evan-Jones offered to carry out a conservation and biodiversity study for free. The chairman thanked him and asked him to leave his details with the clerk. He also reported that access to the road via fencing in Peelings Lane was destroying the biodiversity. P Brown asked if "No Ball" signs were enforceable.
The meeting was then reopened.
This report will be concluded next week..
