NETWORK RAIL IS CARRYING out essential engineering work to railway installations on the B2191 Eastbourne Road Westham level crossing.

Because of the nature of the road layout and size of plant required to carry out the work, the road will be temporarily closed 10 metres either side of level crossing.

The temporary closure will come into effect at 7am on May 10 and last until 4am the next day. A diversion will be signposted and maintained for the duration of the work via the B2191 Eastbourne Road, Westham – C712 Rattle Road – B2104 Lion Hill – Friday Street, Eastbourne – B2191 Hide Hollow, Langney – Eastbourne Road, Westham.

A safe route will be provided for pedestrians along the road to be closed and vehicular access for residents should be possible, but will be restricted at times.

If you have any queries concerning the above please contact Bernie Gorringe or Christine Mitchell on 0345 60 80 193.

I ATTENDED THE annual meeting of Red Dyke Residents' Association last week, which was also attended by some 30 or so residents.

The meeting was opened by the chairman, who indicated his intention of resigning at the close of business.

There were no minutes of the previous annual meeting, only some notes made by the chairman and also what he remembered. These were accepted by the meeting as a true record of what had happened.

Various other matters were discussed, including what subscription should be paid for the coming year.

The outgoing chairman was in favour of cancelling any subscription, until it was pointed out that the constitution lays down that one should be paid and only those residents who had paid were entitled to be members.

After considerable discussion, it was decided to leave the amount paid as 1, which would be collected by the road stewards.

The treasurer then gave her report but was unable to elaborate on the figures as she had only recently taken over.

The outgoing chairman then resigned and the meeting was adjourned for light refreshments.

On return, the next item on the agenda was the election of an auditor, which resulted in L Simpson (the outgoing chairman) offering his services, which were accepted.

A general discussion then ensued among those present about various matters affecting the estate as a whole.

One of the speakers invited to attend was the local PCSO, Jamie Harwood, who unfortunately was not present.

THE COMMUNITY MARKET WAS once again held in St Luke's Church Centre on Friday, April 17 and was again a success, even though the weather caused a slow start.

A new member of the market was a bakery from Eastbourne and they were well accepted.

The bouncy castle booked to entertain the children was set up within St Luke's Church and proved to be very popular.

As it was the last day of the children's holidays, it was hoped that more families would attend and this proved to be the case.

STONE CROSS MILL WILL BE HOLDING A May Day Celebration on Monday, May 4 when there will be a maypole and also the election of the Stone Cross Mill Princess and Prince – something which was started last year and was a success.

The mill will also be open on Sunday, May 3. There will be the normal guided tours of the mill and the mill store will be open for the sale of refreshments, flour and souvenirs.

The Mill Trust has received several inquiries concerning a report carried on BBC South East about a mill that is shortly closing. The trust has asked me to point out that the mill in question is Shipley Mill, where unfortunately the lease is not being renewed. Stone Cross Mill is doing well and will continue to be available for visits as normal.

EVERY YEAR JUST BEFORE Christmas the Thursford Collection in Norfolk holds a Christmas Spectacular Show.

Where, I hear you ask, is Thursford? It is towards the north of Norfolk, fairly near Kings Lynn. A number of tickets have been obtained for this year's performance and an overnight trip has been arranged, leaving Stone Cross on the morning of Friday, November 27, returning early evening on the Saturday.

The organisers have a few spare seats (which are some of the best in the house) and further information can be obtained from Hazel on 01323 760547: first come, first served.

As the title says, it is a spectacular show: the atmosphere and ambience of the theatre is difficult to describe. People are known to attend year after year and still have difficulty in describing what they see. There is something for everybody – music, song, comedy, Wurlitzer organ music and much more.
