20 May 2009
LAST WEEKEND WAS CELEBRATED as Mills Weekend all over the UK and mills – both wind and water – were encouraged to open on at least one day over the weekend to allow visits by the general public.
Stone Cross Mill opened on both days and there was a steady stream of visitors all days long. Organised guided tours took place and the Mill Store (where teas, coffees and cakes were on sale) was always crowded.
The biggest number of visitors of the weekend was when the Long Men Morris team performed on the Sunday afternoon.
Visitors were coming in such numbers that it was impossible to keep count of how many there were, but estimates of 200-300 would not be too far wrong.
ON MAY 13, 1999, a new group was formed in the Westham area that took as its name The Friendship Lunch Group.
Meetings were held every Tuesday in Westham Village Hall and invited residents to meet for a social lunch, supplied by Maynards of Polegate, and this has been going on ever since.
The group has gone from strength to strength, with people joining together for a social occasion as the timings have now been extended so that coffee and cake is served from 10.30am, with the lunch being served at midday.
The time between is filled with games, social talk and a raffle. People who go to the lunch are usually from Westham or nearby but the group is open to all. Visitors are welcome – you can go on any Tuesday and if you find it to your liking then you can order a lunch.
There are no joining fees or subscriptions. The group does not have 'helpers' but if you want to offer your services in any way, such offers will be gratefully accepted.
Lunches cost 4.50 and can be booked by ringing Joyce on 01323 763344 by Monday of each week. Many of those attending make use of the Rover 6 bus door-to-door service. This can be arranged by ringing 0845 505 6951 the day before it is needed and the bus is free to those holding a bus pass.
AT THE ANNUAL PARISH Meeting being held in the Amenity Hall, Stone Cross, on Wednesday May 20, the award of Quality Parish Status will be made by the Rt Hon the Earl of Litton. Residents within the area of Westham Parish are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be provided.
A MESSAGE TO ALL parents, carers, grandparents, teachers and teaching assistants at Pevensey and Westham School: it is nearly time for the summer fair again, which is being held on Saturday, June 20 from 11am until 1pm.
If you have a skill that you would like to share with the children, for instance, face painting, file and painting nails, body tattoos, hair updos, etc, and you would like to help, please contact PTFA chairman Tracey Buchan via the school office. Anything you can offer will be most appreciated and would be a very welcome addition to all the efforts already being made by staff and volunteers of the school and the PTFA.
ON WEDNESDAY MAY 20 Hankham School will be receiving a visit from the Music Service, which will be hoping to encourage some of the children to take up playing the violin.
