NOW IS THE TIME of year when the number of incidents of shed and outhouse buildings thefts seems to increase and Sussex Police are reminding owners of sheds and outbuildings to consider what security measures they have in place.
Sheds and outbuildings are often used to store expensive gardening equipment, tools, motorcycles or quad bikes, which are all attractive targets for thieves. There are shed alarms and other such devices available.
Phil Edwards, the crime prevention officer at Hailsham police station, is always happy to give advice and demonstrate what is available.
If you own a quad bike or off-road bike, be especially careful as these make attractive targets for thieves. Use a substantial chain at least and lock it with and to something solid. A 'ground anchor' is a really good idea.
Some people, if they have a power supply, use a cordless baby monitor to pick up any noises suggesting someone trying to break in.
Owners are also urged to mark their property with a post code. This makes items much less attractive to thieves and makes the job of returning it much easier if the police manage to recover it.
If you would like more advice and information (or any crime prevention products) call Phil Edwards at Hailsham police station on 0845 60 70 999.
MAKE SURE THAT YOU make time on Friday, March 20 to be at St Luke's Church, Stone Cross, when the new Community Market will be open for the first time.
The market will be open from 9am to midday and organisers say that three local prize-winning organic farmers have agreed to attend (Friday Street Farmers – organic beef, lamb, chickens and eggs; Longleys Farm – organic raw milk; The Happy Pig Company – free range, GM-free pork and sausages) as well as Wikaniko eco-friendly range of products.
By the time you read this, posters should have been on display in prominent places, with an advertisement having been placed in a local paper as well as the organiser being interviewed by Sovereign Radio.
There will be plenty of other stalls in and around the church and the day promises to be one for all to enjoy. Make sure you are there.
STONE CROSS MILL IS arranging the opening of the venue for the 2009 season, which starts on Sunday, April 5, when it will be open for visitors and guides will be available to conduct tours.
The mill has already been open this month when a total of 58 children came from a school in Hastings for an educational visit.
Looking slightly further ahead to the Easter weekend, the mill will be open as usual from 2pm to 5pm on the Sunday while on Monday, April 13 there will be an Easter bonnet competition, and anybody of any age can enter. There is no entry fee. Judging will take place at 3pm and there will be prizes for the best entries.
THE FRIENDS OF HANKHAM School will be holding their Easter fair on Saturday, March 28, to which everybody is invited.
The fair will run between 10am and midday and as usual there will be lots of attractions, plant stalls, raffles, tombola, games, refreshments, competition and quizzes, as well as the ever-popular Easter Egg Hunt.
In connection with the fair, the children are being allowed to wear mufti to school on March 26, providing they take something along which can be used at the fair.
WESTHAM AND PEVENSEY SCHOOL are having a Bookworm Week this week with the emphasis on bugs.
On Friday everybody is being encouraged to dress up, both children and staff, as bugs. Should be good fun for everybody.
On Thursday, the school will be visited by a theatre group, which will perform Charlotte's Web.
The children in Year 1 are undergoing special road safety training working with accredited road safety trainers.
The youngsters are being taught to recognise safe versus dangerous roadside locations, how to cross safely between parked cars, and the need to be aware of dangers near road junctions.
The children have been fantastic – responsive and extremely sensible. Many thanks to those parents who are kindly giving up their time to help on the various training days.
