FEW PEOPLE ARE AWARE that the game of petanque, otherwise known as French boules, is played at Hankham.
The Cuckmere Valley Petanque Club meets for some two hours at 10.30am every Sunday and Tuesday and again at 2pm each Wednesday at Saxon Nursery, Hankham Lane, Hankham.
New members or anyone wishing to give it a try can be sure of a friendly reception and all they need do is to turn up on the day, preferably with something to drink, or telephone Alan on 469340 for more information.
Spare boules are available for your use.
Petanque has similarities to bowls but it is played on gravel and steel balls are lobbed into the air with a view to getting them to stop as close as possible to a target ball.
The present membership is split 50/50 between the sexes as men and women can play the game equally well.
THE NEXT COMMUNITY MARKET will be held in the Community Centre, St Luke's Church, Stone Cross, on Friday, April 17 and all are welcome to attend.
The market opens for business at 9am and closes at midday. There will be cheese for sale (have a try before you buy), Friday Street farmers will be there with their organic meat (I had some last weekend and it was the nicest I have tasted in a long while), some home-bred pork, bacon and sausages are on offer, an eco stall selling goods that are good for the environment, plants and flowers and much, much more.
Refreshments are also available while the market is running.
THERE IS A LOCAL branch of the Civil Service Motoring Association, which covers the area between Portsmouth and Dover.
This club meets once a month at the Cooden Beach Hotel and has activities of interest to members.
Membership at the moment is made up of members who live in Eastbourne, Stone Cross, Bexhill and Hastings.
The last meeting, which was the annual meeting, was held on Tuesday, March 17. After the meeting, there was a demonstration of cheese by Say Cheese, which was welcomed by the members. One of the recent club visits has been to Jempsons Store in Peasmarsh, where the visitors were shown how to make cakes and were also given the chance to taste them, together with a cream tea.
Looking ahead, the local club is joining together with the club from Tonbridge and then making a gentle ramble around the famous town of Rye.
If you have ever had connections with the civil service and would like to give the club a try, please ring the secretary on 01424 434496 for information or contact me through the Gazette.
