GREAT news. The JPK Project has finally been given planning approval by Eastbourne Borough Council planning committee to build at Ocklynge Chalk Pit near Kestrel House Nursing Centre.
There are various conditions to the approval but nothing that can't be overcome. Councillor Colin Belsey spoke well at the planning meeting on March 3 in support of the project and, apart from one councillor who abstained, the whole planning committee gave their approval.
There are a number of grant-making trusts which have pledged to support the project, once planning permission was granted and with just a little more fund raising the land can be purchased from Sussex Downs College.
The project is to give people with a learning disability supported residential accommodation alongside meaningful day time activities. It will consist of 24 en-suite bed sitting rooms with two communal sitting/dining rooms, two kitchens and a quiet room, which will give access for social interaction and comradeship. The practical training and work experience will consist of inter communicating tea rooms, a commercial kitchen and bakery and an education centre for continued learning and information on conservation, the environment. and badger activity.
The grounds will be open plan with a low level nature trail. But this is just the start. Even when the land is purchased, fundraising must still continue in order to build the project. Please help in any way you can. For more information contact the project co-ordinator Jill Parker on 486179.
BONNIE GIBBS had been a volunteer senior marshal at Filching Manor Campbell Circuit for about 15 years until ill health two years ago forced him to give up the sport he loved.
He had an infectious sense of humour and was extremely popular with all the drivers who regularly used the track but sadly he died last year.
At his funeral in November, Karl Foulkes Halbard, who runs the Campbell Circuit, was approached by some of the drivers and marshals and it was decided they would have a sponsored memorial race in Bonnie's memory and donate the money raised to St Wilfrid's Hospice, where he had been cared for during the last few weeks of his life.
The event was masterminded by Adam Hatherill-Smith, who put a lot of work into organising the race.
On Sunday, March 1 60 drivers turned up at Filching Manor. Twelve teams of five competed in the sponsored two and a half hour team race.
The winning team was 'Rev', followed by 'Thimble-Massive' and in third place was 'Team Alice'. But the best result was the 2,638 raised for St Wilfrid's - a fitting tribute to a lovely man – Bonnie Gibbs.
BT IS giving local authorities the option of adopting or sponsoring telephone kiosks which it no longer wishes to maintain. The bright red kiosks have been part of the urban and rural scene since 1936 but ones that are seldom used are now in danger of disappearing for ever.
In the case of adoption, the pay phones would be discontinued but the telephone kiosks would remain. Sponsorship is slightly different. The pay phone service would remain in its entirety but the council would need to contribute towards the cost of maintenance.
One of the telephone kiosks in question is in Willingdon Village. EBC does not wish to take on the responsibly of maintaining any of BTs telephone kiosks in the borough but has written to English Heritage to see if the kiosk in Willingdon Village could become 'listed', in which case BT would not be able to have it removed.
Following representation from Willingdon and Jevington parish council, Wealden District Council has objected to the closing of telephone kiosks in its area – which include Coppice Avenue, Broad Road, Church Street and Jevington. A final decision from BT is still awaited.

NOW THAT both Tesco and Sainsbury's have once again started up their "Vouchers for Schools" programme, may I remind you that local schools will be delighted to receive any of these vouchers which you are able to pass on to them. These vouchers enable schools to obtain books, equipment, etc, at no cost to themselves.
PEVENSEY and Westham report that the football match played against Stone Cross School recently resulted in a win for the visiting team by 3 goals to 2.
