Will Labour bottle it?

I'm delighted David Davis has taken the stand he has, and resigned as an MP to fight a by election on the issue of civil liberties.
He has taken a bit of a pasting in the press for doing this, but he's big enough to take it.

Initially I couldn't see the point of him doing what he's doing, as he could have stayed where he was, and having won the election in 2010, be in the right place to change things from the inside (i.e. as Home Secretary).

But his stand is much more fundamental than that. And there's no doubt the vast majority of people in the country think he has done the right thing for the right reasons. So do I.

The best thing that could happen would be for members of the Conservative party to get alongside him PDQ, be wholehearted with their support, and set out the terms of the battle. Not the lukewarm response they've given so far.

I know Mr Cameron didn't want this fight at this time, and he should of course be in control of events, so I have some sympathy but, as they say in politics 'we are where we are'. Let's get on with it, and use this as a great opportunity to show to the nation the awfulness of this 'Big Brother' Government.

And it's going to get worse. The Government has now voted for six weeks detention without charge - ID cards are still on the agenda, and snooping powers for local and central government are going to get worse.

The first priority for any government is to look after the security of the country and it's people. But the Government should always remember they are answerable to the people, not the people answerable to the Government. The Government should be the servants of the people, not the other way round.

It would be a disgrace if Labour did not put up to fight the by-election – pure cowardice. They are pushing this agenda and should have the front to fight on the issues – if they don't they will have lost all credibility (if they haven't already). I think history will judge David Davis well for bringing this fight to them.

Eastbourne Tennis Week

Sadly the Eastbourne tennis this year looks like having the poorest line-up of players for many years - especially now that Ana Ivanovic, the world No.1 and French Champion has pulled out.
Why does Eastbourne not have the pulling power it should have? Presumably it's because it's a week before Wimbledon, and it's not a Grand Slam. But, it is the best grass court venue in the country, and great practice to build up to Wimbledon – this always proved a good enough reason in the past for most of the worlds' top players to be here.
I shall still go however – it's a fantastic week for Eastbourne.

Prediction of the week

I'm on two out of two with my predictions at the moment…. So this week I predict that Svetlana Kuznetsova will win this year's Eastbourne Tennis.
