Why not leave the tennis seating up for a week or two and use the venue for a few concerts, or some outdoor theatre?
Every year after the Tennis week at Devonshire Park, the place is closed down for a few days to 'de-rig'. The marquees, the seating and trade stands are all removed, and the groundsmen do a great job getting the courts back to club playing standard for the remainder of the season.

I've always thought there is an opportunity here that could be exploited.

Why not leave the seating up for a week or two and use the venue for a concert (or two).

There are certainly some of the officers of the council who think it could be done - although, as ever there isn't the money in the budget for it.

Last week I went to Southampton Rose Bowl (Cricket Ground) for a concert - Neil Diamond (don't ask, it was my wife's birthday treat!). Anyway, it was very good, and the point is it was in a cricket ground - a massive stage set was put up, and seating for 8-10,000 people. I gather REM are playing there in August. It's a wonderful use of a venue that's known for other uses - and Devonshire Park could be used in the same way.

Of course there would be issues of noise for local residents - but it happened last year at Eastbourne College, so these problems can be got round.

Just imagine if we could lay on a classical concert there, or maybe some Jazz - a bit of Jools Holland perhaps? Or perhaps to see my dream come true of having Van Morrison play in Eastbourne! Maybe one day.

But as with all these things it will require the council to think outside the box a little, and make it happen in the first year - but it will also need a private investor, or local entrepreneur or sponsor to help make it happen.

Why shouldn't Eastbourne have these things - many councils are making this sort of thing happen in their towns now - Eastbourne has the potential audience - all it needs is the council to kick start the process, and a budding entrepreneur to take it on.

Never mind GM crops - now we've got GM Babies!

I'm not kidding. The Government is pushing through legislation to allow embryos to be genetically modified, created by (in certain circumstances) manipulating their nuclear DNA to change their genetic make up.

The legislation will also allow genetic material to be added from a different adult, meaning in effect the child would have a 'third parent'.

Initially this could mean certain diseases or hereditary faults could be corrected. It could also lead to the possibility in the future of desirable traits being added to create designer babies. This is really happening; in a few weeks it will almost certainly be law. Really. I'm not making this stuff up. I'm not entirely happy with all the implications of GM crops, but for me, this puts it in perspective.

Prediction of the week - After a winning streak, I got last weeks wrong - which was a shame as if I'd got the winner of the tennis right it would have been 3 in a row, and this week I was going to predict the lottery numbers! Anyway, this week, I will predict the Wimbledon winners (over 2 weeks, obviously) as Nadal and Ivanovic.

Have a great week!

I would guess the main reason a concert at Devonshire Park would be rejected is the same reason that you weren't stood on the wicket at the cricket ground...

I havent played Tennis for years but i certainly remember trying to play on the odd uneven court. Nightmare! so a few hundred people wandering over centre court dropping drinks etc... wouldn't work very well.

I agree that a few open air things could be arranged, but the stands would have to actually be moved somewhere else... Hampden Park? Princess Park? there are a few areas of green that wouldnt die if people walked all over it.
