Red lights spell danger!

Published Date: 03 December 2007
I wasn't the only one who noticed the irony that the town hall was lit up with red lights the same week that four brothels were busted in the town.
It turns out it was to mark 'World AIDS Day' on Saturday – a worthy gesture.

It's very sad that these brothels have been uncovered locally – but no-one should be surprised.

Earlier this year, while I was on the council, I bought forward a motion to the whole council on the issue of human trafficking.

I had some criticism of this from some unusual sources, but I glad to say the motion was passed unanimously.

It was to recognise the 200th anniversary of the passing of the Act of Parliament that led to the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.

Human trafficking, particularly for the sex trade, is the modern day equivalent, and I was (and still am) a big supporter of the 'Stop the Traffik' campaign – which exists to fight this disgusting trade.

During the debate there were questions asked about the extent of this problem in Eastbourne – there were some who thought this didn't affect Eastbourne at all – that's naïve and wrong. I hope no-one will be so naïve in the future, following the events of last week.

Last weeks action was part of a national campaign, but I hope Sussex Police will commit to monitor this on an ongoing basis, and take action like this again whenever necessary.

Can I take this opportunity to recommend this website to you - www.stopthetraffik.org.uk

England Manager

Following my rant last week on the incompetence of the FA – I thought I'd give you my prediction as to what will happen with the England manager's job.

I could be well off the mark – but this is what I think will happen.

Jose Mourinho won't rule himself out (code for wanting the job but only if it's with exorbitant money).

But the FA will bottle out of offering it to him, in the same way they didn't give it to Brian Clough all those years ago, when he was clearly the best man for the job.

Martin O'Neill, the Aston Villa manager has said he doesn't want it because he wants to fulfill his contract obligations at Aston Villa.

I think the FA won't appoint a manager until the close season (ie after May next year), and at that time, Martin O'Neill will make himself available.

He'll have done 2 years at Villa, and can legitimately say he's taken them as far as they can go.

It would be honourable to leave during the close season, and he'll be offered, and will take the England job.

In the meantime we'll have a caretaker manager (Stuart Pearce or Alan Shearer)

That's my prediction – what's yours?

Christmas Decorations!

I called into the Marine pub on Friday evening for a pint – wow! What a fantastic Christmas display! Check it out!

Next week my pick of the best Christmas films.

Have a great week!
