Is Airbourne 'review' a sham?
Published Date:

THE borough council's leader has said he has instigated a 'top to toe' review of the Airbourne debacle, but a Freedom of Information response has shown this is just a verbal instruction, and that no formal criteria has been established for the inquiry, nearly a month after the show.
My guess is that this means a report from a council officer will eventually come to a low profile meeting at some point in the future, and that will be that. You can't have a meaningful review without knowing what you are supposed to be looking for!
So to help the Council here are some of the outstanding questions as I see them that need to be answered;
• Why didn't your gut instinct tell you this was not just an unpopular idea, but an extremely bad one – everyone else in the town knew this and you are supposed to be representing them?!
• Why did you try to pass off this decision, as being in keeping with the results of the consultation you carried out – when in fact you spoke to a handful of people, and ignored the thousands who were against it?
• Why do you keep putting forward officers of the council to take the flak rather than councillors, whose responsibility it is? (An example of this was the embarrassing spectacle of Norman Kinnish, the council's tourism chief on Meridian TV the other day who gave very short, stroppy answers to probing questions. He clearly didn't want to be there, and rightly so, he shouldn't have been - the politicians should have)
• If there's £1million in the Strategic Change Fund, why didn't you use some of that to offset the £70K loss and run the show as normal? That way you would have saved Eastbourne tax payers almost £300K?
• Why did you not listen to some council officers lower down the pecking order that would have advised not to charge?
• Why have you not yet given a guarantee that the 2009 show will go ahead and that it will be free?
• Why are you even considering the downgrading of the show to fewer days?
• Are you a bit annoyed that Bournemouth have stolen our clothes after just one year? (They are now the largest free seafront airshow in the world – This time last year, Eastbourne was)
• Why do you believe no-one should be blamed?
• Why won't you and/or Cllr Wallis (who has the tourism portfolio) do the honourable thing and resign?
• Why did you think you could charge, when you do not have jurisdiction over the distance between the low and high water mark? This was always a serious weakness in your plan, and you knew early on that this area would be used for access by those who didn't want to pay
• Instead of a meaningless inquiry which has no criteria, why have you not sought to instigate a professional business plan for the event, to protect its future?
There's loads more, but that will do for now. On a positive note it's great to see a motion down at council to award Liz Walke, her of the Save the DGH fame, the Freedom of the Borough. Well deserved!
Have a great week.
