I had to check three times to see if it was true, and that this wasn't just another naff tribute act!
I'm a big fan of Eastbourne theatres. Some believe we have too many, but I'm not one of them.

They cater for a good mix of people, but it could be widened. However, I couldn't believe what I read last week…

When I received with excitement the new theatres brochure through the post, with what is coming up at the local venues, I had to take a double look!

Could it be true? Is it a printing error? Is Dionne Warwick really playing the Congress Theatre?

I had to check three times to see if it was real, and that this wasn't just another naff tribute act.

But no, apparently it's true, the legendary Dionne Warwick, her of Walk on By fame is indeed playing Eastbourne in November.

Wow! All I can say is Wow!

Hat's off to the theatres team for pulling this off! A massive coup.

I have already got my tickets, and I recommend you get yours soon – they'll be sold out in a few days I reckon.

SO IT'S finally happening. The barriers are up, the protests have fallen on deaf ears, and Airbourne is going ahead this week, and for the first time ever, it'll cost you a fiver a day to see it.

I, along with most of the town no doubt, will have plenty to say about this next week, when we will have seen the effect of the charge on attendance. In the meantime, with the council not realising that the police and all the other authorities will now charge for their involvement (pretty obvious I would have thought), I gather there's a book running to see if this years loss will be bigger than last years!

I WILL spend the weekend at Airbourne (Helen Gardens mainly – you get a good view from there and it's free!), but the rest of the time I will be glued to the Olympics. I hope the local council will be putting out a statement soon as to how Eastbourne's involvement in 2012 is going. The great facilities we have here with the universities, and of course the tennis, should mean we get a great economic benefit when the Olympics come to London.

Have a great week everyone, and see you at Airbourne!

In your desperate attempt to make a political point (although I have no idea why) you have contradicted yourself Ian.

You state "The barriers are up, the protests have fallen on deaf ears, and Airbourne is going ahead this week, and for the first time ever, it'll cost you a fiver a day to see it.". But you then go on to say, "I WILL spend the weekend at Airbourne (Helen Gardens mainly – you get a good view from there and it's free!), but the rest of the time I will be glued to the Olympics."

Either it costs £5 to watch it or it doesn't Ian. I think Ian you are failing to understand the quite simple concept of a £5 charge for the prime viewing area. The Western Lawns remains free for the ground display and there is no charge for watching the sky from elsewhere in the town.

I await a correction with interest.

Finally, for someone who claims to support Eastbourne so much how sad that you will be watching the television instead of our fantastic airshow.

He's a politician eagle Eye, albeit a failed one! Politicians are congenitally programmed to never admit a mistake. Hence the country disintegrating while the present incumbents do the headless chicken thing!

I was glad to read that Ian has not been taken in by the absurd “too many theatre seats” argument that is wheeled out, presumably by Officers, to councillors of whatever political hue. We have had this for at least ten years. Ian quite rightly points out that the Congress is one of the largest stages in the region, and able to accommodate big shows that other resorts would have to turn down. Equally the DP and Hippodrome cater for “drama” and “variety” audiences respectively: only the least imaginative of accountants (we seem to have some working for the borough) could assume that these are the same audiences ! Eastbourne should (as Ian clearly is) be proud of its quality and breadth of theatre- long may it continue.

Eagle Eye I do hope you are right, but from what I have been told by EBC staff I fear you are not. The £5 is an ENTRY fee to Airbourne, including the Western Lawns. It's not just a prime seating area fee.

The fact is, unless I have missed something, there has not been any proper public explanation of just what is going to be fenced off, hence my having to query the EBC staff who then showed me the plan and also said that their projected ticket sales were down by at least 10k per day. The hope is, I was told, that out of towners will pep the ticket sales up. Presumably once here they will stump up rather than about turn and head back to Croydon in a huff. Like the huff I am in at my £140 a month Council Tax not covering my visit to the show.
