Joy and sadness in unique collection of Yiddish songs
Klezmer Klub
THE DANCERS and songs that would have been played in Eastern European Jewish villages for hundreds of years are celebrated when The Lamb Folk Club presents a Klezmer Night on August 1.
Providing the music is Klezmer Klub who were formed in the early 1990s by a group of London-based Jewish and non-Jewish musicians.
Featuring double bass, accordion, trombone, mandolin and clarinet, the music, although born out of poverty and oppression, contains joy, exhilaration, and wit alongside sadness and defiance.
The songs are sung in Yiddish, the language of Eastern European Jews, and singer Vivi Lachs has collected her own unique repertoire which covers a variety of themes.
Included are love songs, music hall comedy and songs about working class life in London’s Leicester Square, Whitechapel and Victoria Park.
With their exciting mix of thumping dance tunes and songs, a typical Klezmer Klub performance will provide plenty of opportunity for audience participation.
Admission to this event is £6 on the door, all are welcome and the music starts at 8pm.
