AN ORIGINAL sailor’s cap from the former frigate HMS Eastbourne was worn by president of the Inner Wheel Club of Eastbourne, Patricia Hamblyn, when she welcomed aboard 65 members, friends and guests to a light-hearted evening event held at the headquarters of Eastbourne Sea Cadets.
President Patricia was flanked on the gangway by two cadets from the highly successful Sea Cadet Unit which she named earlier in the year as her chosen charity. Her aim is for the club to raise more than £1,000 for a new canoe trailer so more cadets can go canoeing.
A cadet in uniform compellingly called the guests to dinner by a Bosun’s call, and they dined on a menu of fish pie and apple pie, prepared by the community and social committee of the club and served by cadets.
After dinner entertainment was provided by a talk from PO Cadet Holding about her trip to Lesotho, and a display of gymnastics and cutlass swinging. This was followed by a short nautical quiz. The evening raised more than £600, more than half way towards the required target.
President Patricia, pictured with cadets, above, thanked them, and said, “This event has given everyone present an insight into what the cadets do and we certainly appreciate you giving up your Saturday night to look after and entertain us.”
