Get ready for panto in Eastbourne!

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty

As the temperature plummets, leaves fall from the trees and the shops crack out their Christmas decorations, thoughts turn to panto season at the Devonshire Park Theatre.

The Eastbourne annual pantomime deservedly has a good reputation across the south for delivering quality shows – without the latest soap ‘name’ but with tried and tested performers.

This year, the panto team will be tackling Sleeping Beauty.

Bernie Nolan, of The Nolans and West End musical fame, will be taking the role of Carabosse the evil Queen.

The 51-year-old, no stranger to pantomime, said, “I love pantomime.

“ It is such great fun and you can ad-lib, especially with being a baddie. I love involving the kids and the comedy.

“One of my sisters once played a baddie and she hated it. She hated all the booing but I love it.”

Bernie admitted she has made children cry when playing the villain in the past but explained she had to remain in character.

Sasha Wareham will be the eponymous Sleeping Beauty, with Martyn Knight as Dame Nellie Night Nurse – returning for his ninth consecutive panto in Eastbourne – and comedian Tucker as Chester the Jester.

There is bound to be plenty of fun for all the family, with songs, dancing, some prizes for the little ones and one or two surprises.

Director and writer Chris Jordan will be putting the final touches to his script before the cast arrive in Eastbourne at the beginning of December to throw themselves into rehearsals.

The show runs from December 13-January 13 at the Devonshire Park Theatre.
