A group of local artists, in Crete for a residential painting holiday course, have undertaken a special mural painting.

The artists were staying at Hotel Coral in Matala and thought a mural, painted on a wall in the hotel’s breakfast room, would make a wonderful thank you gift.

The art group was led by renowned Eastbourne artist Elda Abramson who has been running art courses in Crete for the last five years and is well respected in Matala.

In 2012 she was asked to paint a scene on the pavement in Matala High Street as part of a local festival.

Elda says, “My courses are for beginners and experienced artists alike and the Matala area offers some wonderful views and scenes to paint.”

The mural was inspired by an earlier work by Lynda Couch-Smith who attended the art course.

Lynda says, “The great thing about this painting is that everyone got involved. Amazingly it was all created by just using our hands and fingers with acrylic paint.”

Elda Abramson, who usually works from her studio in Little Chelsea, Eastbourne, added, “It is a lasting legacy by my artists and our special way of saying thank you to Matala for giving us such wonderful hospitality. We are delighted with the mural – it is such a unique piece of work.”
