Clubs and Societies Report: Eastbourne Natural History & Archaeological Society

THE speaker at the February meeting, Casper Johnson, county archaeologist, talked about the archaeology of Bodiam Castle.

This enthralling talk was not only a complete history of the castle but also included the latest research into what may have been the first building on the site and the strategic positioning of the fortification in the geographical setting.

The next meeting is on Friday March 22 when Roger Birch gives a talk entitled: Horsham Stone and Sussex Marble. Horsham stone has been used as a building material throughout Sussex for the past 2000 years, it was found in Eastbourne at the Church Street excavation and can still be seen on the south porch of St Mary’s Church.

The meeting will be at the WRVS Russell Centre, Hyde Rd, Eastbourne BN21 4NX at 7.30pm, doors open 7.15pm. All visitors (£2) and new members are welcome. More details from Robin Reffell on 648226.
