Seaside Road needs help

I have lived in Eastbourne for nearly 18 years and I love it.

Because I love the town, I am always sad whenever I go along Seaside/Seaside Road – it is so shabby with so many closed or run-down shops.
The proposed enlargement of the town centre shopping area will not help this. Of course, there will be even more out-of-centre shops that will be forced to close. I wonder if there is something which can be done to improve the situation, bearing in mind how close Seaside Road is to our lovely seafront?
I'm only too aware there are other town centre roads which would benefit from some kind of "rescue package" too! I am puzzled that one firm's tasteful refurbishment of a listed building, led to them having to close down when the rates were astronomically raised - hardly conducive to others to improve our town.
Mrs M Furhmann, Woodgate Road, Eastbourne

Veracity,

Simple fact. It's hassle to shop in town. Parking will cost an arm and a leg when Lock gets his way. And he will, as local opinion counts for nothing at County Hall. Rates and rents are astronomical leading to high prices. Out of town shopping means adequate free parking and everything under one roof, and the internet brings anything and everything at the touch of a button! Town centres will continue to die unless they are like Brighton and Tunbridge Wells, modern, big names, a young vibrant community and ample car parking. Eastbourne? It's dead!
