At a time when we are all being urged to use energy as efficiently as possible and to cut carbon emissions, a new European Union edict will force British motorists into driving with their lights on from 2011.
Even local MP Norman Baker, Lib. Dem. Transport spokesperson and staunch Europhile, has been reported as criticising this barmy idea stating "what might be right for the tundra in Sweden is certainly not right for the streets of Birmingham."
Welcome to the EU world of 'harmonisation' Mr Baker. Already operating in many areas of our national life, it gives the lie to our politicians who refuse to admit that we are becoming part of a state called Europe in which one law applies to all irrespective of how unnecessary or, as in this case, ridiculous it may be.
R Hopkins Wish Hill, Eastbourne
