Concern for the Congress

It is some time since I have been to the Congress Theatre, so it came as something of a shock when I visited recently.

First the design requires the audience, even those sitting in the stalls, to scale a flight of stairs to reach the auditorium. Those in the grand circle must climb three flights of stairs. There is only one small lift available and, at least on Sunday, there was a long queue waiting to use it.
Leaving the auditorium was even worse. Bearing in mind the advanced age and infirmities of the audience in Eastbourne it is high time that escalators or more lifts are installed.
Apart from that the general shabbiness of the theatre is very noticable. For instance the carpet is worn out in many places and stuck down with masking tape or something similar. The bars, especially the one near the Grand Circle, are very poor efforts.
This is our premier theatre and it is a disgrace to Eastbourne.
