WILDLIFE champion Trevor Weeks officially opened Hailsham's new Tesco store on Monday morning — and picked up a cheque for £1,000 in the process.
Gazette readers nominated Trevor's East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service charity to receive the cash.
Trevor said, "The support is greatly appreciated and the donation will go towards our operational costs which in turn will help us tend to animals in the area in need of help."
A cheque for £2,000 was presented to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service for its BLAZE Coaching for a Safer Community project.
Hailsham resident Elizabeth Hoadley was one of the first customers through the door and received a bunch of flowers from store manager Gerry Byrne.
Champagne, orange juice and cake were also on offer after the official launch, with customers queuing to join in the celebrations.
