HAILSHAM pensioners look set to be able to swim for free at the town's leisure centre from next April.
The two-year pilot scheme will provide free swimming at Freedom Leisure for those aged 60 and over.

It will paid for by government cash which will go to Wealden District Council to fund the scheme.

Cllr Ron Cussons, Wealden's cabinet member for
the community, said, "This is a great incentive for everyone aged 60 and over to help stay healthy and fit.

"Staying healthy is an important part of everyone's wellbeing whatever their age. We want to promote opportunities to help people maintain an active lifestyle.

"More than one per cent of the district's over 60s currently swim in Freedom Leisure's pools. This pilot should encourage others to take the plunge."

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport is offering an annual grant of £57,173 for the next two years to provide the free swimming service. It is not expected to burden taxpayers with any extra cost.

Cllr Cussons added, "There are still a number of details to be finalised before we can commence the scheme but we are hopeful we can start offering free swimming for those aged 60 and over from next April."

Freedom Leisure said it was 'delighted' to be providing free swimming at its pools in Hailsham, Crowborough and Uckfield.

Karen Burrell, head of marketing, said, "Swimming is a great form of exercise and is particularly suitable for the over 60s.

"We hope to see more people taking advantage of this great opportunity to get more active."

Lets hope that the pensioners don't stay in the water too long....we wouldn't want them to get all wrinkly.
