HAILSHAM residents will be able to test their electric blankets on Monday (October 13) to avoid becoming a grim statistic.
Figures show that faulty electric blankets lead to 1,000 house fires in the UK each year, causing 20 deaths and 250 injuries.

The testing session takes place at Hailsham Fire Station in Victoria Road between 2pm and 4pm.

It is one of 10 similar
testing sessions across the Wealden district next week.

Last year, 450 blankets were tested — and almost half failed to meet safety standards.

Cllr Ron Cussons, Wealden District Council's cabinet member for community, said, "I would urge anyone with an electric blanket to get it tested.

"The sessions are a great place to catch up on some of the latest offers available to make your home safer, more energy efficient and easier to run."

The blanket testing programme is co-ordinated by Wealden District Council in partnership with a number of authorities including East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Sussex Police, and East Sussex Downs and Weald Primary Care Trust. The events are funded by the Safer Wealden Partnership.

The electric blanket testing will be accompanied by a free roadshow with information and advice on fire prevention, adaptations and improvements to your home, energy efficiency and home security.
