A BALACLAVA-CLAD burglar who stole goods worth almost £8,000 from shops in Hailsham has escaped a jail sentence.
Adrian North, of Observatory Way, had pleaded guilty to burglary and theft at a previous hearing and was sentenced by magistrates in Eastbourne on Monday.
The 23-year-old had stolen items from caterer Champagne and Caviar in George Street and Boots in Vicarage Field, from where he took electrical goods and make-up. North had used wheelie bins to carry the stolen goods and was caught on CCTV in Boots along with his male accomplice.
He was wearing a balaclava but was tracked down using fingerprints left on perfume boxes disturbed in the burglary at Boots and DNA found on a broken knife used to open a drawer at the caterers.
North was given a 12-month community order, 200 hours of unpaid work and a 12-week curfew order.
He was also ordered to pay £60 court costs.
