The Haven Players gave double delight to packed audiences on July 4 and 5 with its Swinging Sixties musical entertainment and delicious supper at Stone Cross Memorial Hall.
Directors Ronnie Boyce-Stevens and Sue Davies planned a nostalgic look at the lively decade through news, music and sketches, succeeding with a relaxed and slick show.
Mo Munday's witty choreography was clearly enjoyed by both cast and audience. Video sequences by Colin Jackman injected powerful images recalling such events as the deaths of President Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe and Martin Luther King, the moon landings, Woodstock and the Vietnam War. The op-art and mini-skirt clad cast rose magnificently to the challenge and the standard of singing for those wonderful songs was high. Atmospheric highlights included Mammas and Papas California Dreamin', and outstanding performances by Michelle Moon in Louis Armstrong's Wonderful World, Dan Park in the Rolling Stones' Paint It Black, Zoe Toop and Mo Munday in Puppet on a String and Ronnie Boyce-Stevens and Sue Davies in the Everly Brothers' Crying in the Rain. The final, heartstopping Aquarius from the musical Hair, performed by the whole cast sent everyone out full of 60s optimism.
