Trevor's Week - 8 April 2009
The past week I have been up in Cumbria and Scotland working with British Divers Marine Life Rescue looking at the way in which the rescues of stranded marine mammals are handled.
Despite recent publicity about whales being put to sleep, BDMLR will continue to help rescue stranded whales and dolphins where possible.
A big thank-you to our volunteers for helping to cover for me throughout the week. I'd also like to thank everyone who has helped with moving and setting up some new aviaries in Eastbourne.
Before I left last week we were called to a weasel at Newhaven. Unfortunately, the poor animal was attacked by a cat and carried inside and dropped in a bedroom to run round climbing over the furniture and up the curtains!
This was certainly a challenging rescue but eventually success. Unfortunately, though, the joy of a successful capture was short-lived as the poor creature passed away the following day as a result of septicaemia from the cat bite.
WE have had our third fox cub of the season, this time from Bexhill. The very poorly creature was taken to Folly Wildlife Rescue to go with other young cubs. This one is thought to have been attacked by a dog.
Don't forget our Easter Fair on Saturday, April 18, which will be opened by Gordon Astley, the former BBC Southern Counties Radio presenter. The fair runs from 9.30am until midday. Please come along and support WRAS.
Also, don't forget you can book places at our waterfowl awareness course to be held at Crossways, Steyne Road, Seaford on April 28 at 7.30pm. Places are 7.50 in advance and can be booked at the fair or by posting a cheque to Julia Bond via our address above.
This is a great course, very much fun and entertaining. Everyone who has attended so far has thoroughly enjoyed the course, which shows pictures and videos and teaches you more about the common birds that are resident at park lakes and ponds and rivers.
We look at several myths and calls that WRAS receives about waterfowl and the problems which these birds face and what you can do to help.
Another date for your diary. WRAS will be collecting funds at Asda at Sovereign Harbour over the weekend of May 9 and 10. If you are able to help or would like to pop down and say hello please do so, as it would be great to see you.
WRAS rescuer Tony Neads undertook an amazing rescue of a gull caught by its wing 60ft up above a shop in Brighton. After knocking on several doors to find out who owned the flat above the shop Tony was able to erect the WRAS ladders and get to the bird. The gull is now in WRAS care and will hopefully be fit for release soon.
The badger rescued from the boot of a car at Hastings a couple of weeks ago has been released fit and well back into the wild.
We have also had a number of calls about road casualty birds over the past couple of weeks too. If you do see any wild animal or bird injured on a road please stop safely and give us a call from the roadside and monitor the casualty until we arrive.
We would like to thank Folly Wildlife Rescue for taking on a greater spotted woodpecker from us last week too ,which was found injured at Sedlescombe.
Please do not laugh at this call-out but we had a young collard dove rescued from a cow pat at Bodle Street Green near Hailsham last week too. This poor bird is now in care and recovering from its ordeal and will hopefully be fit for release soon.
East Sussex WRAS is a voluntary organisation which relies on donations. We do not receive funding from government nor the RSPCA. Anyone wishing to make a donation should contact The Treasurer at PO Box 2148, Seaford, East Sussex, BN25 9DE.
