Trevor's Week - 10 December 2008
A big thank you to everyone who attended our Christmas fair at Seaford at the weekend. We raised a great £551.02 thanks to all our volunteers involved.
A big thank you to Julia Bond for organising the event and to Beverley Thompson from the BBC for attending and opening the event. We would also like to thank artist Alan Everard for donating a stunning water- colour picture for the raffle to help raise funds.
Last week we rescued a swan on the marshes behind Birch Road.
Workers on the industrial estate saw two swans flying over and one of them hit the overhead lines and crash-landed in the field. Tony Neads rushed to the swan's aid and rescued it as it was fighting off an inquisitive fox.
The swan was clearly injured and unable to stand. Tony drove the swan up to me at Uckfield where I checked it over to find it had a possible dislocated neck. After seeking veterinary advice the swan was rushed up to the Swan Sanctuary for specialist help and support.
We have also had a few more hedgehogs in again this week. We also had a call to a fledgling magpie at the Department of Psychiatry at Eastbourne District General Hospital. This has now been taken on by WRAS carer Julia Gould.
We have had a tame fox in care over the past few weeks. We decided to take some blood and have it tested. The results came back to show the fox is suffering from toxoplasmosis.
The result showed antibodies present and showed that the fox was recovering. Unfortunately there are signs of some brain damage as a result of this condition. The fox has been passed on to the Fox Project which is thinking about sending the fox up to a special centre in Cambridge where it will be assessed in a captive but more natural enviroment to see if it recovers fully or has more permanent damage.

You may recall the gull which was reported shot in Hailsham a few weeks ago. The gull has luckily made a full recovery and was released at the weekend.
We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone for the delivery of newspapers to Horsebridge. We are now completely full of newspapers but could do with a few more towels. Please do not deliver any more items to Horsebridge, but ring our rescue line and leave a message and we will collect them when available.
