Horse-drawn seaside special for Eastbourne
CENTRAL Park eat your heart out – Eastbourne could soon be having a permanent horse-drawn carriage ferrying people up and down the seafront stretch.
It may be something more readily associated with the Big Apple, but visitors to the Sunshine Coast will soon be able to enjoy a scenic tour by the sea after Eastbourne Borough Council gave the attraction the green light.
The local authority’s cabinet heard that a short-term trial back November of last year had proved an overwhelming success and is hopeful that the horse and cart will return to Eastbourne throughout the busy summer months.
They are pencilled in to run from May until October – subject to rubber stamping – and carry out rides between the hours of 11am and 7pm every day.
It will start and finish opposite the Cumberland Hotel on Grand Parade, heading out west along the seafront into Wilmington Square, down Terminus Road and Burlington, before arriving back at its starting point.
And, although prices are yet to be finalised, the expectation is that the ride will costs around £6 per adult, £5 per child or £20 for a family.
Speaking shortly after the local authority gave the plans the thumbs up, the council’s head of tourism, Cllr Neil Stanley, told the Herald, “We are very excited by proposals for horse drawn carriage rides in Eastbourne offering another way for visitors to enjoy our beautiful seafront.
“With our Dotto Train already offering a great way to travel the whole of the seafront and quadricycles offering a fun way to explore the eastern promenade into the harbour, the horse drawn carriage rides will extend the options available to visitors when it comes to making the most of our seafront.
“We are always looking for new ways to improve our tourism offer in Eastbourne and boost the wide range of attractions and events already available.
“I hope this latest addition will be welcomed by our millions of visitors each year.”

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 04:23 PMThis is shocking and I for one will campaign against it. Animals and traffic do not mix. How little The Herald knows about Central Park - because of sustained cruelty to horses by greedy owners, there are demonstrations daily in NY against horse drawn carts and there is a high chance that they will soon be outlawed. This could soon happen in Eastbourne - is this what we want for our tourists? Barbaric, stupid and greedy.

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 09:16 PMHerald, please can you report the whole actual route as what's given doesn't join up. I'm not totally against the idea but I think £6 is a bit steep to be honest.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 06:51 PMThe route does not make any sense to me. It heads west from the Cumberland Hotel to Wilmington Square and then down Terminus Road. How?

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 05:55 PMSorry, Cllr Stanley, this is a ridiculous idea. There's already too much traffic on the seafront which slows to a stanstill when the hateful Dotto train hoves into view, and now you want to throw a horse and cart into the mix? Barmy.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 03:21 PMSix quid to spend ten minutes with your nose three feet away from a flatulent horses rear end?. I can get that for free with my wife!!. Will the tons of doo doo's be shovelled up and used on the seafront flower beds?. I suppose they could convert the Wish Tower Cafe into stables to keep the things in. I see they've chosen a really scenic route. Whatever next.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 11:31 AMGreat!- so now can we have the pavements down Terminus Road cleared of advertising boards, tables & chairs stacked to the point when to get by one has to either walk on the slope on one side or in the road on the other? No, silly me, I had a mad moment when pedestrian safety took priority over business needs - still, should be fun wiping the horse muck off pushchairs, scooters, wheelchairs and cycle tyres when in town - think I'll switch to the Internet to shop.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 10:09 AMOh deep joy! Yet another gridlock-accident-piles of poo causing obstacle for the town. Good thinking Town Hall. Well up to standard!
