CARNIVAL memories continue to flood in to the Herald offices with pictures sent in by reader Helen Warren.

In 1977 William, Helen and Daniel dressed as bumble bees and a flower to be part of a float with the theme of an English country garden and in 1981 they portrayed a Mississippi steamboat along with John, Ben and Tim.

The family also took part in the carnival of 1983 celebrating the centenary of the Borough of Eastbourne when they walked as a steam train.

Helen writes, “Between the early 1970s and early 1980s the Hartington Young Wives Group based at the YWCA in Old Town, which is now Communitywise, organised a carnival entry.

“On a very limited budget, the chaps built the structure and the women organised painting, props and costumes. We borrowed a lorry for the day. It always looked good and quite often we won a prize.”
