Fancy dress bash to mark LGBT month at college

A rainbow coloured Olympic-style torch arrived at Sussex Downs College in Lewes on Friday (1 February), to mark the start of celebrations for LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) Month.

The torch, met by young people from the College’s LGBT Group and Student Union, will travel from campus to campus during February as part of a range of events the College has organised with support from the County Council’s Targeted Youth Service (TYS).

Wendy Hannay, learner services manager at Sussex Downs College, said, “LGBT Month gives us the opportunity to celebrate the differences among our students. All young people need positive role models and information to make safe choices. It’s great that the College is able to do this in conjunction with our colleagues from the TYS and the student body.”

After a week at the Lewes campus, the torch will pass to each of the College’s sites in Lewes, Newhaven and Eastbourne, bringing with it a range of themed awareness stalls, case studies of young people from the LGBT community, plus other activities to get young people involved.

Sam Buckwell, senior targeted youth support worker at East Sussex County Council, said,

“This has been a great opportunity to work in partnership with Sussex Downs College. We will be promoting ‘Come-In’, East Sussex’s new LGBT support group for young people aged 14-19. It offers a safe environment for young people to make friends, gain support and feel more confident about their sexual orientation and identity.”

Throughout LGBT Month, information, advice and guidance will be available, as well as information on the full range of support on offer for students.

The month-long celebrations will close with a fancy dress closing event, to be held at the College’s Eastbourne campus on February 28.
