Eastbourne’s Grand Hotel to host Mozart weekend

MOZART fans are tuning up for 2012 and Eastbourne’s 10th anniversary weekend celebrating the work of the composer.

Each year the weekend featuring the London Mozart Players is the highlight of the musical calendar at the town’s Grand Hotel, attracting classical musical enthusiasts from both East Sussex and around the country.

Tickets are already being snapped up for the milestone 10th anniversary event that takes place from February 3-5 and will star acclaimed Mozartian Howard Shelley.

As a pianist Shelley has performed, broadcast and recorded around the world and he became the London Mozart Players’ associate conductor in 1990 and principal guest conductor two years later.

He is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s best interpreters Of Mozart’s piano works.

In addition to music by Mozart, including Divertimento and his early Piano Concerto K414, the weekend will also feature compositions by Schumann, Schubert and Mendelssohn.

Other highlights include the London Mozart Players’ managing director Simon Funnell talking to Howard Shelley about his life and career in music.

Guests will also have the opportunity to attend rehearsals and dine with the musicians.

The weekend will also feature the Palm Court Strings and Shelley Van Loen, well-known for her afternoon tea concerts at the hotel that recreate the Grand’s musical hey day when audiences tuned in to the weekly BBC broadcasts transmitted live from the hotel between 1924 and 1939.

The Grand Hotel has a strong musical tradition. In addition to the BBC transmissions Claude Debussy completed his symphony La Mer while staying at the Grand in 1905 and Elgar conducted at the hotel.

Hotel general manager Jonathan Webley said, “The weekends have become one of the most popular events on our musical calendar with guests booking a long time in advance and the fact that this year is the tenth anniversary event has already generated a lot of interest and we look forward to welcoming guests to what promises to be a very special event.”
