Down Your Way: Stone Cross, Westham and Hankham

THE Friends of Hankham School will hold a jumble sale in St Luke’s parish Centre on Saturday, March 10 from 10am to noon. Anybody with suitable items for this sale are asked to either contact the school or take it along on the morning of the sale.

WEALDEN District Council is in the process of preparing a Local Development Framework document to guide development in Stone Cross over the coming years. The council proposes to allow 650 new properties in this area and has suggested four possible options as to where these houses could be built.

It first wishes to consult with both residents and the parish council to establish which of the four options is preferred. The details of each option together with guidance notes can be found on the Wealden District Council website at www.wealden.gov.uk

A book containing the same information will also be available to view at the parish council offices, but residents are asked to first phone the clerk on 461299 to arrange a suitable appointment. The consultation period will finish at 5pm on February 24.

WESTHAM’S Parish Council Planning Committee met on Monday, February 13, in a public meeting to consider the four options. The committee discussed a number of local factors such as sustainability, access, transport links, neighbourhood policing, density of housing and the capacity of the local medical centre to cope with an influx of new residents. After a lengthy debate the committee unanimously decided option three was their preferred choice for the long term future of Stone Cross. Various options can be seen on the council’s website.

A VISIT from the director of the Love in a Box appeal recently was to thank staff and pupils at Hankham School for the contribution they had made to that charity. Lisa Smart showed the a dvd of how the filled shoeboxes are sorted, transported and distributed around the orphanages and hospitals of Eastern Europe and how much joy those simple gifts create. She thanked all for their generosity
