ASH WEDNESDAY, the first day of Lent, will be celebrated with a Mass at Christ Church, Seaside, on Wednesday evening at 7.30pm.

Palm crosses used at last year’s Palm Sunday service will be burned to create the ash and worshippers are traditionally marked with an ash cross on their foreheads as a sign of penitence and mortality.

VETERAN Fleet Street journalists Phil Dampier and Ashley Walton will speak about their best selling book What’s In The Queen’s Handbag? for the Literary Lunch Club on Friday, February 24, noon for 12.30pm. In Diamond Jubilee year, the book reveals many amazing and often unknown facts about Her Majesty and has sold more than 40,000 copies to date. To book call 731451.

FILM forum next meets in the vestry of Christ Church on Friday, February 24, at 7pm when a full-length feature film will be shown, followed by a short general discussion. The cost is £2 per person. The title of the film cannot be advertised, but information can be obtained by calling 749653.

POPULAR Irish singer Frank McCaffrey returns to Eastbourne on Friday, February 24, to perform at a musical cabaret dinner. County Mayo’s biggest star sings in the style of Daniel O’Donnell and always sells out, so you are advised to book - call 731451. The dinner is in the Langham, 7.30pm for 8pm.

CHURCH cleaning will take place at Christ Church on the first Sunday of every month, at around noon. Anyone willing to help in any way should call Jacqui on 749653 during office hours.

MINOR Prophet, Major Message is the title of the next Bible Reading Fellowship meeting, when members look at the Book of Haggai. This is the 90th anniversary year of the BRF and new members are welcome. The meeting is on Monday March 5, 7.30pm-9pm, in the vestry of Christ Church, with coffee and biscuits available from 7.15pm.
