Down Your Way Sovereign Harbour: June 20th
HARBOUR residents have been treated to the sight of The Matthew of Bristol, a replica of the vessel in which the navigator John Cabot crossed the Atlantic in 1497. The Matthew, returning to its home port after taking part in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant on June 3, spent the night on a visitor berth before sailing on the evening tide the following day. For photographs, visit www.shra.co.uk/news.html.
THE WINNING Sovereign Harbour carnival team met in Cosmo on June 13 for a celebration meal, and a few drinks! After a very enjoyable evening, project co-ordinator, Alison Attwood, said she was ready to get started on preparations for the 2013 event. If you would like to help email email@example.com.
MEMBERS of the Eastbourne East Neighbourhood Policing Team will hold a community surgery, 3pm-4pm, on June 20 outside Bright Ideas on the Sovereign Harbour Waterfront. The informal meeting, which will also be supported by members and officers of the Borough Council, SHRA and Neighbourhood Watch, is a chance to raise any concerns directly to the people who can do something to help - or just to meet them, and introduce yourself.
If you have issues you would like to discuss you can contact PC Ed Faulkner on 07787 685813, or PCSO Martin Hylands on 07909 873787.
A “SEA-bird Interpretation Board” has been installed on the outer harbour close to the locks. The board, jointly funded from the devolved ward budget and SHRA funds, shows images of many of the seabirds commonly seen at Sovereign Harbour. SHRA chairman, Jan Weeks, said, “The outer harbour has a diverse population of sea birds, which residents and visitors observe with great interest.
“We already had a Flora and Fauna Interpretation Board on the North Harbour beach, so it seemed appropriate to have something similar on the South Harbour.
“I thank ward councillors and other partners for their help in bringing this idea to fruition. This is just the sort of community project for which the devolved ward budget was instigated.”
THE “Best of British” Summer Fair will be at the Haven School in Atlantic Drive on Saturday, July 7, 11am-2pm. It is hoped there will be several displays in the arena - including the Eastbourne Scout band. There will be all of the usual stalls, and the organisers hope to have a few more ‘have a go’ games. Some help will be needed to run some so, if you can spare some time, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
THE Supplementary Planning Document for the Sovereign Harbour neighbourhood is still open for comment. Feedback can be given on the form enclosed with a leaflet delivered to all harbour homes, or by following the link from the home page of the Borough Council website: www.eastbourne.gov.uk. A public consultation event is being organised at the Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club on Saturday, June 30. Consultation closes on July 24.
