Down Your Way: Roselands and Seaside - April 4

THE Friendship Club for senior citizens meets on Thursday, April 5, in the lounge of Duke Bernard Court, Latimer Road, 2.15pm to 3.45pm.

Members meet on a social basis to chat over tea or take part in quizzes and games. The weekly subscription is 50p to cover the cost of refreshments. More details can be obtained by calling Hazel or Dick on 722450. The Friendship Club will not meet on April 12, but will resume as normal on April 19.

A WHIST Drive for everyone who enjoys a friendly game of cards will be held in St Augustine’s Hall of Christ Church on Thursday, April 5 starting 2pm, cost £2.50 per person. Details from Gladys on 720885.

ST JOHN Ambulance Retirement Fellowship members will meet at St John Headquarters, Bourne Street, on Thursday, April 5, at 2.15pm. New members will be made very welcome, whether retired or ex-members of St John or anyone interested in the work of St John Ambulance. For details call Joan on 506855. The Fellowship meets on the first Thursday of every month.

A MAUNDY Thursday service will be held at Christ Church, Seaside, at 8pm on Thursday, April 5, which will include the traditional foot washing, and will be followed by a Vigil until midnight.

A CHILDREN’S Workshop for Good Friday takes place at Christ Church from 10am-noon on Friday, April 6, with many activities related to the Easter story. The main Good Friday service, the Liturgy of the Cross, begins at 2.30pm for all who celebrate Easter. There is a Sung Mass on Easter Day at 10.30am with traditional ceremonies. DAME Margot Hamilton will provide comedy and song at two Ladies’ Lunch Club lunches on Wednesday April 11 (ladies only) and Thursday April 12 (gentlemen allowed). The larger than life mezzo soprano, who has had a varied career that has ranged from appearing in recital with Dame Felicity Lott and members of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company to playing the role of Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest, will be introduced by The Dowager Lady Crabtree. The lunches are at the Langham Hotel, noon for 12.30pm each day and can be booked by calling 731451.

THE RNLI, local branch, next meets on Friday, April 13, when the talk will be about A Year in the Life of the Mayor. In February, the Mayor officially opened the recently refurbished RNLI Lifeboat Museum in Eastbourne. RNLI branch meetings are held in the West Dean Suite of the Langham Hotel, 10am for 10.30am, and admission is £1 which includes a raffle ticket. Tea and coffee available.
