Down Your Way: Pevensey and Pevensey Bay - April 11

GET YOURSELF along to St Wilfrid’s hall at 6.45pm on Tuesday May 1 for the annual parish meeting when all kinds of matters about Pevensey and Pevensey Bay come under discussion and you can have your chance to have a say.

MY next door neighbour Betony has been researching her ancestors also called Belcher. And she’s found out I am better connected locally than I thought. I knew the original Belcher or Belleseur as he was, came over with William the Conqueror but I didn’t know that in the 1770s William Belcher was the Pevensey Riding Officer. The Riding Officer’s job was to track down and catch the smugglers who frequented this coast.

CONGRATULATIONS to the hard-working couple who have tidied up and prettified the verge of Bexhill Road alongside the new house by the bridge.

THE WORDS of MP Gregory Barker on the steps of the defunct Castle Tea Rooms last September, “I am pleased to say that following a productive meeting with English Heritage the tearooms will be put out to tender very soon with a view to reopening them in early Spring next year.” No sign of it yet, Greg!

COMING up this weekend at the Beach Tavern. Friday at noon The Bob Mummery Cabaret Show and at 9pm The Steve Smiley Roadshow. Saturday 9pm Twango and on Sunday Tom Fitzpatrick The Crooner at 3pm and at 7pm Barryoke Karaoke.
