Down Your Way: Hampden Park & Willingdon Trees - May 23
WHAT is a Martlet? It’s the bird on our county emblem, but most of us know nothing about them, or much about our local heritage.
Residents of Hampden Park and Willingdon Trees are invited to a great fun day, on Wednesday, May 30, which includes a guided tour learning about local wildlife, and a practical, creative session working with an artist. The event is from 10am till 3pm and transport to the venue, in Alfriston, is free.
So prepare suitable clothing and footwear for the day, take a drink and a picnic, and ring Claire on 07969 804301 (spaces are already being booked).
THE Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year gives everyone an opportunity to have some extra fun, and at the Broadway Church they are celebrating in style. On Saturday, June 9, have a Jubilee Summer Fair in their newly-refurbished premises in The Broadway off Lindfield Road.
There will be a bouncy castle for the children, together with face-painting, craft activities, Karate and dancing displays. For the adults there will be a wide range of interesting stalls, including plants, homemade cakes, cards, books, and toys. Then everyone can sit down and enjoy a delicious cream tea! The event runs 2pm-4pm and the organisers are hoping for good weather.

Take him to Frog Firle Farm, Alfriston, where there is a a family day, including various activities and the opportunity to see round the farm. SOME may have heard of the Sportsbourne event due to have taken place in Hampden Park on Saturday, June 9. This was to be for young people to have the opportunity to try out various sports for free. Due to there being so many happenings around that time, the event has been postponed to Saturday, August 25 - watch this space nearer the time for details.
MOST realize the Hampden Park Level Crossing is the busiest in Europe, so it is disturbing to have a report from the British Transport Police that a group of children have been found playing near the platform edge, dangling their legs over it, and playing ‘chicken’ with approaching non-stopping trains.
Also, two youngsters were caught climbing over Brodrick Road footbridge on to Network Rail land.
British Transport Police ask parents to make their children aware of the dangers of such activities, which could lead to serious injury or worse. But even some adults may be in need of some friendly advice, as British Transport Police have reported seven people failing to obey the traffic signals at the Level Crossing, putting themselves, and the oncoming trains, at serious risk.
