Charities team up to tackle fuel poverty

A NEW partnership has been formed between leading local charities to help victims of fuel poverty this winter.

Sussex Community Foundation has teamed up with Citizens Advice Bureau and Age UK to distribute funds raised as part of a new campaign called Surviving Winter.

Surviving Winter is being organised by Sussex Community Foundation locally and was inspired by individuals keen to donate their Winter Fuel Payment from the government to support people less able to pay their fuel bills.

The campaign has won the backing of several high profile Sussex residents including and forces sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn and has so far raised more than £19,000 in Sussex.

To ensure the funds reach those most in need, Sussex Community Foundation is working with Citizens Advice Bureau and Age UK to identify those individuals most in need of help.

An estimated 6,000 households are living in fuel poverty in Eastbourne.

Across East and West Sussex and Brighton & Hove more than 90,000 households live in fuel poverty, with many areas showing a high level of excess winter deaths well above the South East average.

Money raised will be directed to those most in need of help and make sure they can afford to stay warm, eat well and remain mobile, as well as help them in practical ways such as ensuring the can make doctor’s appointments, get to the shops and maintain an active social life.
