Despite the atrocious weather on October 4, members and guests including president Richard Austin-Cooper and Messrs Boxall, Harmer, Holmes, Luck, Pierce, Pellet and Standen, (accompanied in some cases by their wives and friends) attended the 47th Regiment RA's grant of the Freedom of the City of Chichester Parade at Chichester Town Hall.
Among the dignitaries attending were the Regimental Hon Colonel Major General Wilson CBE, The Director Royal Artillery Brigadier Tadier CBE, together with the Lord Lieutenant and the High Sheriff of West Sussex and Chichester's Mayor Cllr David Siggs
.
The RSM of the 47th Regt welcomed members on arrival, who were ushered to front seats to observe the parade. The regiment, having been granted the Freedom, marched through the city with their colours flying, bayonets fixed and drums beating.
The Regiment has a long association with Sussex and currently more than 100 soldiers from 21 Battery are deployed on operational duties in both Afghanistan and Iraq whilst 10 (Assaye) Battery will be deployed there shortly.
After the parade members were bussed to the War Memorial where prayers of dedication and a blessing were recited, unfortunately in heavy rain reminding several of the 'older' soldiers of when, they too, years ago stood listening to the chaplain whilst their uniforms became increasingly sodden!
However, members were well-received and had an excellent day out. This included welcome hot curry and drinks at a Town Hall reception.
Secretary Ken Millman, unfortunately unable to attend due to recent hospitalisation, is to be congratulated on his organisation of the event. The next meeting will be on Wednesday December 3 at the RAFA Club, Wish Road at 11.15am. Gunners seeking to join the association should contact the secretary on 649876 or the president on 721933.
