ON september 5 acting chairman Mrs Wynne Dougill welcomed 18 members and two visitors to the meeting.
During the business part the secretary announced that Bexhill Down Guild will be holding its annual quiz dayon October 24 and tickets were eagerly snapped up. The chairman then introduced the speaker 'Johnnie' Johnson, who gave a talk on two murders
committed in Eastbourne in the early 1900s. It was a fascinating talk, made the more interesting having happened in places very familiar to members today, such as South Cliff Avenue, where a policeman was shot dead. There were also a few grisly details from other cases. An appreciative vote of thanks was given by Mrs Vera Carver. Tea was then served by Miss Mary Delves and birthday cards and floral gifts were handed or delivered to five members, plus two ladies whose birthdays fell in August when there was no meeting. An extra gift was presented to Mrs Daphnie Ripley to mark her 80th birthday. The raffle was drawn and the meeting closed at 4pm.
The next meeting will be on October 3 at 2.15pm at St Saviour and St Peter's Church Hall, Spencer Road.
Derek Townsend will speak about the Role of Modern School Governors. Visitors and new members will always find a warm welcome. For further information contact Mrs Shirley Knight on 729225.
