Caroline Tyler is concert pianist who gave a recital recently for the Friends of the Towner.
She started playing the piano at the age of five and gave her first public performance aged nine. Now she is an accomplished musician playing all over Europe and is a past winner of the Norah Sande Award in Eastbourne, the Friends' concert forming p
art of the prize.
Caroline played a very challenging programme with impeccable skill and an obvious love for the music. Spencer Freeman, director of the Eastbourne Festival, introduced her and she then presented her musical choices with great charm. From the first note of this recital one could only be impressed by her fluency and sureness of touch. At times this touch was delicate but, when the music called for it, the power was there too.
Caroline was seen at her best in an elegant setting which could have been the corner of a dining room. A standard lamp cast a warm glow over the proceedings and a small table next to the piano was dressed with a cloth and dark green silk flowers. The attention level of the audience was high and each piece was greeted with heart-felt applause. Featuring compositions by Debussy, Liszt and Prokofiev, among others, this was an evening to remember.
