At its latest meeting on Sunday September 21, 13 members of the Friends of Tide Mills/Newhaven Eastside collected more than 20 sacks of assorted rubbish and participated in its very first detailed litter survey under the Marine Conservation Society's annual marine litter analysis scheme.
It is unfortunate that in the 100-metre stretch of high tide line surveyed, they picked up and logged more than 300 items of assorted rubbish, most of which is undoubtably fishing industry-related.
By far the most common item (nearly 200 in number)
were the newly-trimmed remnants of trawl nets, followed by larger pieces of net, followed by rope. It is very likely that the items found on shore are just the tip of the iceberg and that many times this number remain in the sea for years probably.
It is hoped that by reporting formally to the MSC, more pressure can be laid on the industry to clean up its act.
On a much happier note the Friends have received a very welcome donation from a Paranormal Investigation group, ESPI, based in Alfriston, whose members spent a night down at the Tide Mills village recently, basically investigating the possible presence of paranormal activity. The very kind donation is most welcome as they will soon need to purchase more litter sacks and grabbers for their increasing numbers, although, of course, they would welcome any local company's offer of some sponsorship.
The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday October 19, and the following one will be on November 16. New members are always welcome but please get in touch on 01273 517291 or e-mail brian.skinner2@

The group meets at 10am at the end of the old village road, beach end, for approximately two hours. All are welcome.
